For most homeowners, salt and sand are the most common options. But what is the difference? Which one should you use?
Why use salt in your driveway in winter?
Salt lowers the freezing point of water, which is why it is traditionally spread on roads to prevent them from becoming icy or to help melt ice that has already formed. In addition, it is an inexpensive option for the task!
Why use sand on ice walkways?
While salt melts ice, sand has a different purpose. Sand, because it is an abrasive material, is applied to icy roads to provide traction. It can effectively create traction on ice at any temperature, whereas salt is not always effective in extreme cold. However, sand is only effective if it is on the surface of the ice. If it is buried under the snow, it must be reapplied.
How to properly de-ice your driveway?

Of course, the best way to prevent ice from forming is to prevent snow from accumulating on your driveway. Shovel or blow regularly!
